Nigerian Correctional Service

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is partnering with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to strengthen the service's capacity to ensure the safe, secure, and humane custody of offenders. This is aimed at effectively rehabilitating and reintegrating offenders, especially violent extremist offenders (VEOs) in the northeastern states of Nigeria. This formed the agenda of the project planning meeting for officers and men of the service as well as officials from the UNODC, today, in Abuja.

In his remarks, the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, who was represented by the Deputy Controller General of Corrections in the Directorate of Inmates’ Training and Productivity (ITP), Emilia Oputa, reeled out the benefits of the existing partnership with UNODC to include, among others; upgrading vocational and skills acquisition facilities, staff training and retraining, as well as enhancing the health and sanitation of inmates in the selected custodial facilities in the region.

In her remarks, the National Project Officer of UNODC in Nigeria, Ms Melissa Omene, said that the meeting was to assess last year's activities and chart a way forward for 2023. She took time to enumerate the successes recorded in 2022.

The meeting was attended by the crème de la crème of the Nigerian Correctional Service, including the DCGs, ACGs, and CCs, as well as Controllers of Corrections from Gombe and Adamawa states.
